Colony season 1

Add a few faces from previous top series together (Lost, Walking Dead, Heroes,...) and put them in a dystopian future, and we have the premises of Colony.

Now pour a sauce based on the ingredients of shows like V (the original) over it, and we are set for 10 episodes of benching with this sci-fi series.

Plot

In a dystopian, near-future Los Angeles, a couple, the Bowmans, live with two of their three children, under a regime of military occupation by an organization known as the Colony Transitional Authority. The Hosts have built an enormous wall, that surrounds the central part of Los Angeles, and similar walls around other major cities (now called "Blocs"), while various buildings still display severe damage from the armed conflict during the invasion, known as the "Arrival".
A resistance cell based in Los Angeles includes at least one former U.S. military/intelligence operative named Broussard.

The series begins less than a year after the beginning of the Occupation. The Bowmans seek their  son, Charlie, who was separated from them during the Arrival, while they try to survive with meager resources in a changed world that is constantly dangerous despite its urban veneer of order. Will is forced to work for the Redhats to hunt down the Resistance, or his family will be sent to the Factory. Katie, who is (unbeknownst to Will) a member of the Resistance, now has an inside source in Will.

The family moves up the social ladder due to this, and enjoy a lot of luxury like good food and medicin, but while Will hunts the Resistance, his wife and her friends leak information, being one step in front.  But when they capture one of the aliens, the city is being blown to pieces by the aliens.

Opinion

It wasn`t bad, but it isn`t one of the greats of sci-fi either.  But still, this series has promise, as it layers intrigue and revelations in a nice paced fashion.
The way how Will handles it as he finds out his wife is the leak for example.  Or how he protects Schneider, the governor for all the misery, even though he knows he is blackmailed into serving his redhats for information about his son.

While we know the aliens are the bad guys in essence, it makes you wonder at times if their controlled environment isn`t better for the survivors then the poor conditions the resistance is causing due to their actions...
But for a "hard" sci-fi lover like myself, who enjoys current or recent shows like The Expanse, this isn`t really that fantastic a series for myself, though it has it`s merits for sure.  Let`s just see what season 2 will bring...

Rating: 5.5 / 10
